Randy Frey
Randy Frey has been the Head Varsity Softball Coach at Los Gatos High School since 2013, leading the team to league championships in 2018, 2022, and 2024. His coaching career spans decades, having coached at various levels, including with the Silicon Valley Fusion 16U club team since 2000, Silicon Valley Elite Fastpitch 16U (2017-2018), the South Bay Quakes 14A (2014-2016), and LGSGSA Magic (2005-2013). Randy’s leadership has had a significant impact on the local softball community, and he is also an active member of the CIF Softball Committee and the SCVAL Softball Chairperson.
Randy’s coaching philosophy has always been rooted in his mission to mold great young women and athletes into champions, both on and off the field. His program focuses on three core goals for all teams: having fun, learning softball, and winning games—always in that order. Randy believes in pursuing victory with honor, and this guiding principle is reinforced by the Positive Coaching Alliance, which encourages respect and integrity among players, parents, and coaches alike. Under his leadership, several players have gone on to play at the Division 1 level, including Hannah Yeager (North Carolina State, 2013), Ashley Mains (NYU, 2015), Madeline Colombo (Manhattan College, 2016), Rosie Gomez (Canisius College, 2021), and Alaana Panu (Dartmouth, 2021).
Randy's accolades reflect his dedication to the sport and his community. He was named Coach of the Year by the DAL in both 2022 and 2024, and he was honored as the CCS Honor Coach of the Year in 2018. He also received the Santa Clara Valley Baseball Hot Stove Banquet Community Service Award in 2006. Additionally, Randy is a member of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association, further demonstrating his commitment to continued learning and improvement in the sport.
Outside of softball, Randy has a long history of involvement in high school football as an official. Since 1980, he has officiated over 20 CCS Championship Finals, six NorCal Football Championship Finals, and three California State Football Championship Finals. In 2006, he was one of just three CCS officials selected to work the inaugural CIF State Championship. Randy is also a member of the Leadership Group for the BASO Football organization and serves as one of its eight crew chiefs.
Randy holds a B.A. in Journalism from San Jose State University, class of 1976, and enjoys contributing to the growth of both athletics and his community in various ways.
