The Cats Varsity Basketball team opened the 41st Annual Los Gatos Lions Club Wildcat Shootout in thrilling fashion, erasing a 12 point halftime deficit to defeat the San Mateo Bearcats 45-37. It was a tail of two halves for the Cats who struggled to find a rhythm offensively and had multiple defensive miscues in the first 16 minutes. But they stuck together in the 2nd half and earned a hard fought victory.
The Cats got to work right away in the 3rd quarter fueled by a steal from Scotty Brennan and a fast break put back finish by Zach Otoupal. The quick jolt seemed to get the engines started for the Cats who were able to cut the deficit to 5 points heading into the final frame. The Cats outscored San Mateo 18-6 in the 4th quarter behind Anthony Martin's 8 points in the quarter. Brennan had a game high 16 points to go along with 4 steals. Otoupal paced the Cats on the glass with 9 rebounds followed by Osha Moloney's 7 boards.
The victory stamps the Cats spot in the semi-finals Thursday night at 8:00 PM where they will face Cal High (San Ramon) who defeated Leigh in the opening game of the night. Leigh will take on San Mateo at 3:30 Thursday in the Consolation bracket.
